His top 16 finish there was enough to qualify him for the next Pro Tour in Mainz, where he debuted in the senior division.
This was when he first generated attention to himself by winning three GPs in quick succession - GP Barcelona, GP Vienna, and GP Amsterdam were won over a time span of four months.
This earned him the contemporary nickname "King of Grand Prixes", but he ascended past Grand Prix dominance when he made the top eight of the World Championships, where he ultimately did not just win the event to become the World Champion, but in the process also earned the title of —99 Player of the Year , despite being an unknown quantity coming into the season.
During the next season, Budde failed to make it to the top eight of any Pro Tour events, though he finished 10th at the team PT in Washington, D.
Instead, it was during the next season, the —01 season , that the Kai Budde era would truly begin. Pro Tour Chicago started an unprecedented run of dominance where Budde won six out of 14 Pro Tours, two of them being Team Limited Pro Tours that he won alongside Dirk Baberowski and Marco Blume on the team called the Phoenix Foundation.
Budde won PT Chicago , PT Barcelona , and PT New York , and players and commentators started questioning whether he or Jon Finkel , previously undisputedly considered the best, was the best player of all time.
At PT New York, Randy Buehler suggested that if Budde won the next Pro Tour as well, PT New Orleans, he was the best player of all time.
Eric Taylor responded that there was no way that was going to happen, and if Budde won New Orleans, he'd eat his hat.
Budde did, in fact, win Pro Tour New Orleans as well. In —02 , he had Pro Points, 42 more than the runner-up finish, Jens Thoren.
Budde also won the German National Championships in , and followed it up with a Team World Championships title with the German national team the same year.
Additionally, he won the Magic Invitational , resulting in the creation of a card in his likeness, Voidmage Prodigy. Following the —04 season , Budde largely withdrew from professional play.
He still showed up for the occasional event, including PT Philadelphia , where he was for a long time undefeated, and ended up in 27th-place.
At the World Championships, he commented that barring a significant change in the system, he did not think that anyone would ever overtake him when it came to number of Pro Tour wins.
Over the next few years, Budde would show up to about one event a year. Among these was Pro Tour Amsterdam , where he generated considerable excitement in the Magic community by posting his 10th Pro Tour top eight, though the event ended with a quarterfinals defeat against Brad Nelson.
In , Budde joined the team currently known as The Pantheon , where he was playtest partner with among others former rival Jon Finkel. Starting with PT Dragon's Maze , Budde returned to attending Pro Tours regularly, and posted several strong finishes, including 17th at PT Theros and 14th at PT Born of the Gods , but he did not return to the top eight.
Budde has also featured on the Vintage Super League from seasons 2 through 5. Because it was such a tough ballot there had been speculation that some voters would assume that everyone else was voting for Kai and therefore could use their five votes on other players.
After the voting started I was slightly worried that either people did not vote me as I would get in anyway or that I just stopped too long ago to get enough votes," admitted Kai.
This means we can look forward to seeing Kai play in New York this December. Could we be looking forward to a tenth Top 8 as well?
I already made sure I would get enough days off work, in case I got into the Hall of Fame," Kai confirmed. I am not a big fan of flying to Japan and back just for a few days over there.
Chances are I will not attend many events in Asia. For example I have high doubts I will ever attend a 2HG event, but I won't miss European or East Coast Limited tournaments.
And making a Top I still think I know how to play those cards. Also if you play in enough PTs, odds are you get lucky sooner or later.
I've been fortunate enough in the past when I needed it, why not again in the future? The list is too long and includes family, friends and even teachers who allowed me to take time off school to travel and play in events, so I am not going to list everyone here.

Kai finished 52nd in Mainz and for a while struggled to qualify for another Pro Tour but eventually managed to qualify for the Pro Tour Chicago.
Fellow player and now friend Baberowksi had finally managed to qualify for the Pro Tour, too. While Kai finished 19th Baberowski won the whole tournament.
After a second place at Grand Prix Birmingham Budde added three Grand Prix titles within six months. The third one in Amsterdam even came by defeating Baberowski in the finals.
With these finishes Budde had racked up enough Pro Points to be in contention for the Pro Player of the Year title in the final event of the —99 season.
Having not made a Pro Tour Top 8 appearance yet the leader in the Pro Player of the Year race did not consider him to be a threat, though.
When Budde advanced to the final of the World Championship in Tokyo he had already secured the Pro Player of the year race.
After adding an 11th-place finish at the next Pro Tour in London the rest of the — season turned out to be disappointing.
He was not able to make it beyond the first round in any of the newly introduced Masters events nor did he finish better than Top 64 at any of the succeeding Pro Tours.
It took Kai until November to make another final eight appearance. A third place at Grand Prix Florence was followed by his second Pro Tour win.
The Pro Tour Chicago title made him the third player to win more than one Pro Tour, the other two being Jon Finkel and Tommi Hovi.
Winning Pro Tour Barcelona in the same season, Kai managed to surpass Finkel and Hovi to become the first player to win three Pro Tours.
In the semi-final at Barcelona Budde had even asked if he could concede to his friend Patrick Mello to make him eligible for the next Masters, but the officials had refused.
The —02 season started very well for Kai Budde with consecutive wins at Grand Prix London and Pro Tour New York. For the Team Pro Tour New York Kai had chosen his friends Dirk Baberowski and Marco Blume , despite being able to play with virtually anybody he would have liked.
Dirk had retired from the game for some time, but Kai managed to convince him to come along for the Pro Tour.
Team "Phoenix Foundation" as they called themselves went on to become the most successful team in the Pro Tour history.
Several Pro Players had answered something to that extent when asked who their favorite amongst the final four teams was. He is still the only player in the game to have won back to back Pro Tours.
In between, Budde had also won the Invitational which gave him the chance to create a Magic card of his own design. The card eventually became Voidmage Prodigy.
Throughout the season a few more Grand Prix titles followed and eventually he managed another Top 8 appearance at Pro Tour Nice, this time losing in the quarter-final to Bram Snepvangers.
Before the final event of the season, the World Championship in Sydney, Kai was already locked in to succeed himself as Pro Tour Player of the Year.
Only a week after Nice, Budde won the German Nationals , securing another title he had not won before and thus making the national team. While he finished 44th individually at the World Championship, Kai led the German team with Felix Schneiders, a fellow player from his Cologne days, and Mark Ziegner to the team title.
